Edna O’Brien’s A Journey was the first story I read for the Women’s Experiences in Women Authors English class I am auditing. A very vivid story about a couple having an affair. I want to read more by Edna O’Brien; she is Irish.
And I wrote my first song, Single Again, a somewhat humorous song about being single again after not being single since “God knows when.” I enjoyed trying to come up with a melody to fit the words. First I used a melody that was too much like the Kit-Kat jingle. Keith Stiver our instructor says that when you have a good lyric, the words “sing” to you. I have the chords and everything: verses, chorus, bridge. It feels natural to use the guitar when writing a song. I can’t believe it took me so many years to write a song, but Stiver is right that 90% of writing is rewriting. I’ll take my guitar to class and sing my song tomorrow. I can even take a break on my own song, which is the most exciting part of it all, and I seem to have come up with a real melody although it reminds me of a jazz instrumental whose title I don’t remember.

Upload a recording of your song here so we can all hear it, Deb
I’ve got it recorded, just need to upload it somehow.
I tried multiple ways to upload media, and each time it said that this file type is not allowed. 🙁
Okay, I’ll record it on Friday. I didn’t play it for the class because our instructor was ill.
